With our patented processing method, we at AVISTA OIL save up to 90% CO₂ emissions compared to primary refining. However, even we cannot upcycle waste oil without producing any emissions at all. We would like to show how much we actually produce and what is behind it with this transparent overview:
In 2024, we emitted approximately 775,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases across the entire group of companies. Our location in Germany accounts for around 290,000 tonnes of this.
What does this include?
First, we record all greenhouse gases, not just the best-known CO2 (carbon dioxide), but also other gases such as methane and nitrous oxide.
There are also three so-called ‘scopes’.
· Scope 1: Direct emissions generated on our premises or in our vehicle fleet. For example, the combustion of natural gas in the refinery or diesel in the tanker trucks.
· Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy. These are the emissions generated, for example, during the production of the electricity we purchase.
· Scope 3: All other emissions from the upstream or downstream value chain. This includes, for example, emissions associated with the products we purchase or with the combustion of the fuels we sell. Even business trips and employee commutes are included here. Much of this is, of course, only estimated.
Why do we calculate emissions at all?
It is important for us to calculate these emissions annually so that we can compare them with previous years. In parallel with the calculation, we are developing measures to reduce emissions in order to stay on the 1.5-degree path. This means that we are helping to ensure that the Earth warms by a maximum of 1.5 °C compared to pre-industrial levels (around 1850) as a result of man-made climate change.
