All used AVISTA OIL oils are heat treated in these distillation systems under light vacuum pressure. The dewatering systems are used to distill out water and volatile components (such as gasoline). The remaining dry oil has a flash point above 61 °C and a water content of approx. 0.1 – 0.2 weight %. These dry oils are sent to subsequent processing steps depending on their quality classification.
The used oil dried through atmospheric distillation is fed to the flash distillation system from 100 m³ storage tanks. A multi-step distillation process takes place in this system, first distilling a fraction similar to light heating oil. The bottom product located in the base of the column is then separated by a process known as flash distillation (consisting of a flash drum and two thin-film evaporators): into a base oil raw distillate, called the “flash distillate” and distillation residue called the “bottom product.”
All of the additive compounds, soot particles, metal abrasion, etc. in the dry oil which were previously part of the used oil make up the distillation residue. The flash distillate is already similar to base oil and is dark brown or semi-transparent. This raw product is already free from heavy metals, for instance. The thermal oil furnace used in this flash distillation is primarily operated with our own fuel, and fumes are treated using a wet scrubber so that the pure gases full permit requirements. The wastewater produced by the wet scrubbers is fed into our internal water treatment plant. An upstream high-temperature combustion chamber ensures that refinery exhaust can also be burned in this furnace, significantly improving our emissions levels.
Our patented “Expanded selective refining” process is based on the liquid-liquid extraction process. Vacuum distillates extracted from the used oils are intensively blended with a solvent during this process, freeing them from remaining unwanted components. This creates our premium base oil Kernsolvat. The eluted extracts can be used as heavy oils. The solvent is continuously reclaimed from the process and reused, producing almost no waste.
Das Kernsolvat is the basis for our high-quality lubricant product range:
The project to build our “Expanded selective refining” process was supported by the European Union as part of its Life - Environment program and by the state of Lower Saxony through a research and development program for innovation.
A state-of-the-art blending system enables the production of high-quality products for the lubricant sector. With a standard product range of 160 automotive and industrial products, the refinery offers its customers a wide range of products. The connected packing department ensures the filling of 1 litre. Containers up to 1,000 litres.
